ISLANDWIDE: Charity to raise $5M for disabled veterans
November 11, 2008
A new charity is aiming to collect $5 million by Veterans Day 2009
to assist disabled U.S. veterans returning to Long Island from Iraq
and Afghanistan.
The nonprofit, Veterans Rock, is being launched by John J. Tunney
III, owner of several Long Island restaurants including Carltun on
the Park in Eisenhower Park. In a statement, Tunney said he hoped
Long Islanders would help him "create the largest grassroots
veterans effort in the country and inspire other cities and towns to
do the same."
Donations would be used to retrofit veterans' homes, provide
counseling, purchase prostheses and driving apparatuses and buy food
and clothing. The fund drive will begin in January. Branches of TD
Bank will be collection sites.
